Protect Your Pavers This Winter: Stop Frost Heave and Joint Failures

December 23, 2025

December in Mississauga brings frequent freeze–thaw cycles that can wreak havoc on interlocking patios, walkways, and driveway pavers. If you’re hosting for the holidays or simply want safe, attractive curb appeal for your festive lighting, now is the time to protect your hardscape. Here’s how Breakaway Landscaping helps homeowners in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and Milton prevent frost heave and joint failures—and what to do if trouble has already started.

Why Pavers Heave and Joints Fail in Southern Ontario

When moisture sits under or between pavers, it freezes and expands. Repeated freeze–thaw cycles push pavers upward (frost heave) and wash out jointing sand, leading to loose units, gaps, and uneven surfaces. The common culprits we see across Peel and Halton:

  • Poor drainage or slopes directing water toward the hardscape
  • Insufficient or poorly compacted base layers
  • Missing or failing edge restraints
  • Worn, cracked, or non-polymeric joint sand
  • Aggressive de-icers and improper snow removal tools

Your December Checklist to Protect Driveway and Patio Pavers

A little maintenance now can save a costly repair in spring. Before the next deep freeze:

  • Sweep and clear debris: Leaves and dirt trap moisture and promote ice.
  • Top up joints with polymeric sand: Stabilizes joints and resists washout. Lightly mist to activate and allow to cure above freezing.
  • Check and secure edge restraints: Replace lifted spikes or cracked edging to keep interlock locked.
  • Improve drainage: Clear nearby downspouts; ensure water flows away at a 2% slope.
  • Choose gentle snow tools: Use rubber-edged shovels or snow blowers; avoid steel blades on edges.
  • Use paver-safe de-icers: Prefer sand for traction or calcium chloride in moderation; avoid rock salt on new installations.

How do you prevent pavers from heaving in winter?

Prevention starts below the surface. For Mississauga and Oakville homes, we design and install interlock with winter in mind.

  • Build the right base: 6–8 inches (or more, as needed) of compacted 3/4" crushed stone with fines, placed in lifts and compacted with a plate compactor. A geotextile can help separate native soil and base on clay sites.
  • Compact properly: We compact base and bedding layers to reduce voids where water can sit and freeze.
  • Manage water: Grade surfaces and surrounding soil so water drains away; add French drains or channel drains where needed.
  • Lock the system: Quality edge restraints and polymeric joint sand maintain interlock and reduce movement.
  • Seal strategically: A breathable sealer (applied in warmer months) can reduce water absorption and salt penetration. If your pavers weren’t installed with these standards, a targeted retrofit—new edge restraints, regrading, or re-sanding—can dramatically improve winter performance.

Smart De-icing for Interlock in Burlington and Milton

The wrong de-icer can shorten the life of concrete pavers and joint sand. For driveways and walkways:

  • Prioritize mechanical removal first (shovel/blower).
  • Use sand for traction on icy spots.

If needed, choose calcium chloride or a “paver-safe” blend; avoid frequent use of rock salt, especially on new or sealed surfaces.

Rinse residues in early spring to protect landscaping and hardscape.
